Hi, My name is Kay Woods of Emikoo Cattery.
I am a relative new comer to breeding
Selkirk Rex and we had our first litter of
kittens in 2006.
Emikoo cattery is situated in the suburb of
Alexander Heights, North of Perth. We are
registered with the Feline Control Council
of Western Australia. All our cats are very
spoilt and treated as part of the family.

Our animal family is
not only made up of cats we also have two
staffy’s, two budgies and two rats. The only
problems our cats have with our dogs is that
they continually kiss them. At night you can
find them all curled up together on my bed.
We are members of FCCWA and we often show
our cats here in Perth as well as at a
National level. Our boy Jengari
Benhawkins was Reserve Group Three cat of
the year 2007.

A STAR IS BORN
Compared to many other breeds of cats the
Selkirk Rex is very new. It was first
discovered in 1987 in Montana USA. A worker
at an animal shelter discovered a female cat
with curly fur. She was a blue – cream and
white shorthair cat. Her fur was thick,
gently curled on her neck, legs and tummy.
Jeri Newman bred Persians but decided to
take this strange cat home. She named her
Miss De Pesto. Jeri did some research and
decided to mate her with a Persian male.
The litter of six was born in July 1988. She
produced 3 curly and 3 straighthaired
kittens. One of the curly males named No
Face Oscar Kowalski was mated with Persians,
Exotics and British Shorthairs to discover
if the curly gene was dominant, which was
correct.
The name Selkirk Rex was chosen because
“Rex” for their curly coats and “Selkirk”
after the nearby mountain range in Canada
